
Asher Watkins tragically lost his life to the same buffalo he was trying to kill.
The American millionaire and big game hunter, from the prominent Watkins Ranch Group in Dallas, was killed by a Cape buffalo during a hunting trip with Coenraad Vermaak Safaris in South Africa on Sunday, August 3rd.
Coenraad Vermaak Safaris confirmed to PEOPLE that the 52-year-old died in a “sudden unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo.”
He was said to be tracking the buffalo together with a professional hunter and tracker from Coenraad Vermaak Safaris.
“This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his loved ones,” Hans Vermaak said in the statement to PEOPLE.
“We are doing everything we can to support the family members who are here with us and those back in the United States as they navigate this tragic loss. This is a deeply traumatic incident for all involved. The family and our team members who were present at the time are understandably shaken.”
What makes this so much worse is that Asher Watkins’ mom, Gwen, stepdad, and brother Amon were waiting for him at a safari lodge when the brutal incident unfolded.
The affluent rancher was active in the Dallas Safari Club and avidly hunted birds and other wildlife.
According to the company’s website, he was the head of Watkins Ranch Group, a successful brokerage company that sells multimillion-dollar ranches in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
